World’s largest duty-free Shop opens in Hainan China

The world’s largest duty-free store opened on Monday morning in the city of Sanya in south China’s Hainan Province, as the Chinese government continues to promote the island province as an international tourism destination. Haitang Bay International Shopping Complex, a three-storey building that spans 70,000 square meters, integrates duty-free shopping, restaurants, entertainment venues and cultural presentations.

The shopping complex is operated by China Duty Free Group (CDF) and sells 300 international luxury brands in 21 categories such as perfume, cosmetics, jewelry, watches and leather goods.According to Hainan’s provincial finance department, duty-free sales in the province exceeded 8 billion yuan (about $1.3 billion) between April 2011, when the duty-free policies started, and August this year.

The Chinese government has been promoting international tourism in Hainan by issuing duty-free policies, tax refunds after departure, and visa exemptions for tourists from 26 countries and regions.
