China is expected to see around 80 million tourists during the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival holiday, according to the latest data from the country’s tourism administration. The domestic tourism sector could take US$4.37bn during the three-day holiday from May 28 to May 30.
A survey shows excursions to suburban areas would be the most popular choice for most Chinese travellers. The cities of Xi’an, Chengdu, Suzhou and Guilin are the top popular destinations for domestic trips.
Thailand’s Phuket Island, Japan’s Okinawa Island and the Maldives are the top choices for overseas trips. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of a year according to the Chinese calendar.
Traditions on the holiday include racing dragon boats and eating Zongzi, glutinous rice and fillings wrapped with bamboo or reed leaves.
